"King Roger"
Karol Szymanowski
One of the greatest masterpieces of the 20th century. An opera, oratorio, and mystery at the same time. Conducted and directed by the most renowned figures, it captivates audiences on opera stages worldwide.
The action takes place in Sicily around the year 1150. During a service in the cathedral in Palermo, King Roger, along with his wife Roxana and advisor Edrisi, learns that the Church is threatened by the founder of a new religion, a young beautiful Shepherd. At the king's request, the man is brought to the temple and accused of blasphemy. The crowd demands the Shepherd's death, but the king, Roxana, and Edrisi are greatly impressed by his gentleness and humility. Roger, granting him freedom, orders him to appear in court.
While waiting for the Shepherd, the king confesses his fears about Roxana's feelings, who advocates for the Shepherd. He casts a spell on Roxana and the courtiers, who join in a euphoric dance of love. The unflinching king, however, orders the Shepherd to be imprisoned, who easily breaks the heavy chains and calls for a journey to the land of eternal freedom. Everyone, including Roxana, follows him. Only Roger and Edrisi remain in the palace. The king abdicates the throne and, as a pilgrim, sets out in search of his wife and the Shepherd.
The third act moves the action to the ruins of the ancient theater in Syracuse. After a long journey, Roger and Edrisi arrive here. The king loudly calls for Roxana, and she first responds from afar, then appears before him and praises the cult of the Shepherd. Together, they kindle the sacrificial fire. Soon the Shepherd in his true form - Dionysus - enters the amphitheater. Full of delight, Roger raises a hymn in honor of the rising sun.
